The Giant Paper Airplane

On March 21, 2012 a paper airplane measuring 45 feet long was flown high above the Arizona desert (video below). The flight- and crash landing- is believed to be the largest paper airplane ever flown.

The Great Paper Airplane Project was sponsored by the Pima Air & Space Museum, one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

The design of Arturo Valdenegro’s was chosen from hundreds of entries. According to the website…

Arturo won the Great Paper Airplane Fly-Off on January 14, 2012, and since then, he’s been involved in the build and design of the giant plane, even consulting with Art Thompson. At 12 years old, Arturo has always been into creating things with paper. He’s an avid origami and paper figurine builder, and he learned to fold paper airplanes from videos on YouTube. Arturo says he wants to be a mechanical engineer when he grows up. We have a feeling that’ll work out for him.
